Highway 395!
Just South of Lee Vining on Hwy 395
I’ve been thinking of this image for more than 30 years. For whatever reason I never pulled over to make it happen. This building has been there for more than 50 years. I moved to Mammoth Lakes in late 1992 and lived there for two years. I would drive by this structure often. Back then I wasn’t as into photography as I am now. I did carry a Nikon FE2 with me almost everywhere. When I planned this trip, this was at the top of my list to accomplish. The stars aligned and I finally took the shot. I’m pretty excited with the results.
Over the last few years i’ve been struggling to define myself within my photography. I want to be something that i’ve created in my mind. I don’t know if it is possible or realistic but I still strive toward it. The idea is that my photography needs to evolve. I want my images to tell a broader story. I want my images to sing. I want to create art. I believe that i’m an artist and that my camera is my brush. This image is one that feels right to me in fulfilling that goal.
I’ve been making images seriously for more than 25 years. I’ve built a solid tool kit of abilities but know there is more to learn. Thinking outside the box has never been my strength. I tend to draw within the lines and know that this is my biggest flaw. I want to break the rules, make something that makes people think. Great artists weren’t thinking about fulfilling someone else’s idea of what is great art. They created from their heart and soul. Georgia Okeeffe is a great example. She painted the way she wanted and it didn’t fit trends of the time. Her art is amazing and that is what shined through.
I don’t know the road ahead but I do know one thing, I love this craft. I love capturing the world, the way I see it and then sharing it out. I love the process. I’m happiest with a camera in my hand and an adventure to embark on. succeeding is to keep creating, keep exploring possibilities. I want to learn and grow and break free of all that is holding me back.
Thank you for being part of that journey!
Until Next Time,
John
